Our Aim is to Improve the Health and Education of Lao Children

Lao-kids has been successfully operating for nine years. The founders of Lao-kids are a long-term Luang Prabang expat resident (Ruth Borthwick) and a Laos “frequent visitor” from Hong Kong (Christine Seabrook). Neither of us is a professional fund raiser - the construction and maintenance of this web site and the administration of donations etc. is all provided on a voluntary basis. This means that 100% of all donations go directly to supporting the children.

The Lao government has been concentrating on putting educational infrastructure in place. This consumes large amounts of money. We assist by keeping the children healthy. This increasingly becomes more and more expensive. With the global economic crisis and rising costs we have had to make hard decisions about what we can provide. Every kip/dollar counts no matter how small the contribution.

Government Orphanage Schools and Ethnic High Schools in Luang Prabang Province

Lao-kids works directly with the Directors and teachers of the Government Orphanage Schools and Ethnic High Schools in Luang Prabang Province. When children remain healthy and are able to graduate from High School it enables them to go on to tertiary studies, or to work in the Public and Private sector, or to become entrepreneurs themselves - it gives them choices! This provides a better future for the children, their families and the Lao nation. Last year we helped more than 1,500 children to remain healthy and continue at school.

See Orphanage Schools and Ethnic High Schools for more details on how we help the children in these places.

People Working for Children in Luang Prabang Province

Lao-kids
has also taken on the challenge of supporting a few of the very worthy charities and individuals in Laos that are directly assisting children to be healthy and educated. These are:

Our Principles

The principles that we abide by are:
  • We have no salary or administrative costs - ALL THE MONEY RAISED goes to meeting children’s needs.
  • We spend time discussing with Directors, teachers and relevant charity workers in the field to find out what their needs are and to prioritize them.
  • We never give cash - we always ascertain the needs and then meet those needs.
  • We DO NOT facilitate visiting or volunteer work at the orphanages or schools. There is a problem with mutual language and there are issues around the privacy and protection of the children.

Our Fund Raising

We fund raise in two main ways:

1. Ruth's Book Exchange in Luang Prabang
The "One for One plus 20,000 kip for the Children" Book Exchange is open from 10 am to 12 noon and then 2pm to 6 pm every day. (See How You Can Help for directions to find it.)  However, a real problem with donations via the Book Exchange is that they are adequate during the high tourist season, but drop to almost nothing during the hot, wet summer months. The number of children we are supporting has steadily increased in the past few years, so we needed a way to make sure that sufficient funds are available whenever they are required for all children.

2. Donations Received via this Web Site
This web site was set up to try and raise awareness of the plight of the children with people world-wide. By doing this, we hope to ensure that continuous funds are available all year long. The design, construction and maintenance of this web site is completed on a totally voluntary basis. We are determined to ensure that we can continue to raise sufficient funds to ensure an ample and continuous supply of food, medicines, clothing, school materials and personal hygiene items to the children. Through the information in this web site, we hope to encourage you to help us help the children. If you have any questions about donating, please feel free to email us at info@lao-kids.org.
