This Year's Special Project

Lao-kids major project for 2010 is to build an extra eating area and kitchen for the children at Suan Luang Ethnic High School.

At the moment, the only covered areas cannot provide shelter to everyone. The support poles of the eating areas are wooden and are being eaten by borers. The kitchen is an open space at the end of the eating hall, sheltered by a piece of lean-to corrugated iron.

We want to raise funds to provide concrete posts and new corrugated iron for the new eating area, plus build a basic enclosed kitchen area.

The total cost of all of these works is approximately US$ 7000. (You might wonder why it is so expensive to build in Luang Prabang. There are several reasons. The main one is that LP is in the mountains and all materials such as wood, concrete, corrugated iron etc. must come by river on barges or by the road and this requires fuel... which has increased in price SO MUCH over the past couple of years.)

If you would like to contribute to this project, please go to the "How You Can Help" page and make a donation via PayPal (and if you like, please add a note in the PayPal screen to allocate this donation to the Suan Luang school building fund). All donations will be acknowledged with a Thank You Certificate.

Protein in Meals

There is a serious lack of protein in the children's meals, which consist mainly of rice and vegetables. We are trying to regularly provide yoghurt drinks and tins of fish to evey child to supplement their diets. We also provide a meat meal to the children as often as possible (and preferably every two weeks).

The current project of raising rabbits is continuing to be successful. The rabbits are either slaughered for food or sold at the market and the money used to buy meat. A long-term volunteer helped build the rabbit hutches and provided the rabbits. Some of the senior children have been taught how to care for the rabbits and how to slaughter them for eating. This is providing a little extra protein in the children's meals.
